Monitoring salmon season extension

In 2011, the Tay salmon angling season was extended from 15 October to 31 October for a three year trial period. The extension operates under a licence obtained from Scottish Ministers that was obtained by the Tay DSFB. It only applies to the main stem of the river up to Dalguise and all fish caught must be released.

It was also agreed that one third of the income from lets during the extension period would be donated to the Tay Foundation to assist in monitoring the extension and for the general good of the district.

The Tay Foundation is involved in analysing data which anglers are required to record on catches and fishing effort. This will help determine whether there is a significant fishing opportunity in October or not.

While the first year (2011) suffered from poor letting and very bad fishing conditions, the extension period in 2012 provided most of the participating beats with their best, or close to their best, two weeks of that season.

A report on interim findings will be finalised shortly and posted here when available.
